The Town Of Goodnessa musical theatre production for children
Copyright 2005-6 by Jonathon Miller
The play begins as the end of a concert for children put on by Jodam, a folksinger, which includes a song about The Town Of Goodness. Then the play itself arises as a dream by Jodam similar to the events in that song, with characters appearing from other songs in the concert as well.
The Town Of Goodness is about a former boomtown that has fallen on hard times, because the people had become suspicious of each other, withdrawn unto themselves, and begun bickering.
The children of the town are tired of the negative attitudes and are ready to do something to make things better. Jodam the folksinger, who has come to town for a visit, helps the children to put together a musical show for fun and to get the townspeople to come out and enjoy themselves.
Gradually, people come out of their homes to see what is going on, and they enjoy the show. Soon they are talking nicely with their neighbors again and the prospects for the town improve.
There are a few twists and turns in the plot to make things interesting, but the whole thing is not too complicated.
There are about 20 songs altogether, including several in the opening concert. There are themes of caring for and helping people, overcoming hard times, preserving nature and the environment, and learning about natural health and avoiding too much junk food.
Children who come to watch the play can also participate in the larger scenes if they wish.
There will be auditions for children and adults for key roles this summer to prepare for touring around northeast Ohio in the Fall. For some roles a second or third actor will be needed to ensure that one of them will be available for each each performance.
Children affiliated with organizations where the play will have a performance date can also be in the play in lesser roles, which they can learn quickly just before the show. These minor roles include singing on choruses, dancing, and perhaps learning a few lines of dialogue.
We will be needing help this summer & Fall, particularly on set building, choreography, and production management. We would be glad to have a few extra musicians to play for rehearsals and performances as well.
auditions & rehearsals planned for August --
